Today is the fifth death anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India. He is popularly known as the missile man of our country. He was a great educationalist. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam is called the ‘Missile Man of India’, for his contributions towards the development of our missile projects. He was born on October 15, 1931, at Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu and died of cardiac arrest on July 27, 2015 while giving a lecture at Indian Institute of Management Shillong.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, popularly known as APJ Abdul Kalam, was an Indian aerospace scientist and also a political leader who served as 11th President of India from the year 2002 to 2007. He was also intimately involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. He was nicknamed 'Missile Man of India' for his contribution in the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology in India. Kalam also played a pivotal organisational, technical, and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.

APJ Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 to a Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He studied physics and aerospace engineering, and later served as a scientist and science administrator at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002 with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the then-opposition Indian National Congress (INC). He was a recipient of several prestigious awards, including Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990), Bharat Ratna (1997), Veer Savarkar Award (1998).
